LAW – West of the Pecos

We crossed the Pecos river today and stopped in the little town of Langtry, TX. to check out the Judge Roy Bean visitor center. The Judge served as Justice of the Peace in west Texas in the late 1800’s. Most of his rulings usually resulted in fines as there was no jail. With Judge Bean the fine usually added up to what money you had on you. He was supposed to send the fines into the state but I don’t think that he ever got around to doing that. He had many interesting rulings. Tales about the Judge multiplied until he became a legend – even in his own time. Many were undoubtedly pure fiction, but some of the most colorful stories are historical fact.

If you are not familiar with Judge Roy Bean you should check up on him. He was quite a character and there are some really fun stories about him.

Here are some pictures of Judge Roy Bean’s actual court house/saloon/billiard parlor.
