The park is very remote. The closest towns are Marathon, 39 miles away, and Alpine, 58 miles from the park. This is apparently the off season primarily because of the heat. There is almost nobody in the park. We see maybe 6 or 7 cars a day as we travel around the park. With two of those being Border Patrol. Temperatures run between 99F and 113F depending on the elevation. It’s big, beautiful, hot and there is almost nobody here which all makes it fantastic.
We cruised down in the Chisos Basin and snapped a few pictures. That tall looking plant is a century plant. When it flowers it grows that central spike which can grow to 20 feet before it blooms.
