Rio Grande Gorge

The road up to Taos, NM, ran along the Rio Grande Gorge. In this portion of the state the river has many rapids which vary in severity. Because of the rapids this is a very popular rafting area.

Ten miles north west of Taos on highway 64 will get you to the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge. At 650 feet above the Rio Grande, it is the fifth highest bridge in the United States.

On one side of the bridge is a rest area. On the other side is a New Mexico style roadside mall. I took two pictures of the mall, one from each direction, so that you can see how quickly the terrain can change in New Mexico.

Right across the street from the mall is the Food Court.

There is a walkway on the bridge with several observation areas. You can walk out and enjoy the view if you have a mind to. Linda started walking out to the center with me but the farther out you get the worse it shakes and bounces when traffic passes by so she quickly decided to wait for me at the mall.
