Boat Trip

The National Park Service offers a boat tour on Morrow Point Reservoir, traveling seven miles into the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. The tour is conducted on a 40-foot, 42-passenger pontoon boat.

The tour begins at the Pine Creek Boat Dock which is 35 miles east of Montrose, CO. At the Highway 50 mile marker 130 we had to turn down a dirt road and travel several miles to the Pine Creek parking lot. From there we had to walk down 232 steps to an old narrow gauge rail bed and another 1/2 mile to the boat dock. The hike back up from the boat dock was a bit of a challenge for those of us who normally live at an elevation 330- feet compared to the 7,000- foot elevations around here.

When we got back to Montrose we found that they they had shut down main street for their Montrose Main in Motion activities. Apparently they do this every Thursday evening through the summer.

Well, we joined in and it was a lot of fun. They had different music groups and all sorts of food. One guy had a booth set up on the curb where he was selling hot dogs for 10 cents. He also gives you a free drink. What a deal. Needless to say he had quite a line. We tried out the crepes instead.
